Sometimes, they access this data by setting up fake cell towers designed to act like the actual ones. These counterfeit towers are referred to as false base stations (FBSs), rogue base stations (RBSs), or International Mobile Subscriber Identifier (IMSI) Catchers.
Even cellular tower workers can be attacked. 5G conspiracies are thought to be behind numerous incidents of abuse – including being physically assaulted and spit at – causing the workers of one telecom company to flee angry groups.
